Among the essential list of every day carry things including wallet, mobile phone, keys and others is an EDC flashlight as well. An EDC flashlight which is an acronym for Every Day Carry flashlight is a lightweight and often portable flashlight that you can carry with you on the go.

It is a vital surviving tool in many conditions. Mostly used by military, police forces, it can even be a camping flashlight. Having an EDC kit can be very useful and it comes handy in many situations.

Now, the important question which arises is…


If you search a little, you’ll find numerous brands including the top ones like Felix, Olight and other term such as lumen, size, etc. So, in order to determine the best EDC flashlight, the following features are essential:

  • Lumens

Most of the EDC or other flashlights are described by the number of Lumens it produces, so what is a LUMEN? A Lumen can thought of as the brightness of the flashlight or in other terms how much visible light is produced by it.

Flashlights in general can range from 10 to 18,000 lumens for high end flashlights. In case of EDC, they range from 50 to 1000 lumens and you can buy depending upon your need.

FYI: Price is that much of a factor. Even the best LED flashlight under $50 can have high level of lumens.

  • Bulb


Conventional incandescent bulb has been around for quite some time now, but with the introduction of the LED which is an acronym for Light Emitting Diode, things have begun to change.

As LED offers greater efficiency and better brightness as well as lighter in weight. Those are some key things that I like the most about these bulbs. You can almost find the same type of bulb used in a cheap bright flashlight all the way to the most powerful compact flashlight.


  • Size

The size is where everything comes at a halt. Because with an EDC kit, you simply cannot handle big and heavy flashlights with more power, you certainly need a flashlight which has a powerful illumination as well as is compact in size.

  • Durability

In terms of durability, a flashlight with a metal body should be preferred instead of a plastic one. As the metal one can withstand the hardships, bumps, and knocks pretty good.

  • Power source

The Best EDC Flashlight

Most of the EDC flashlights use the CR123 batteries or AA batteries, while the AA have been used for a while, the CR123 is a comparatively new technology which promises more potential, greater power and lasts longer than AA batteries.

The types of Flashlights.

EDC or Keychain

The EDC is what i’m speaking about in this article. They are small, powerful, and effective.

The Keychain lights are less powerful but also pretty awesome. They provide a good amount of light, can attach to your “KEYCHAIN” and barely notice that it is there.


This is your grandpas flashlight. Something I don’t really recommend. They lightweight, plastic material, and provide enough light for you to what you need it to do. Cheap also.


Tactical is what I’m talking about. They are almost the holy grail of flashlights. Mostly used for military and police situations. They’ve become open to the general public. Mostly known to be seen attached to officer or military personnel rifle or handgun. They provide a higher amount of light. And they are stronger also.

Can be used for self defense, finding your way through the dark also. They also cost more.

Heavy-Duty or Industrial. 

These are the types you see at the ball game. They are huge and shine bright over the football stadium. Walk past a construction site and you will see one of these. 

Its safe to say you wont be buying one of these to carry around with anytime soon. Doesn’t mean you can’t.

They are heavy, provide you with way more light. And can be pretty pricey. Most common ones are like headlights. Things you see construction workers wearing in order to complete their job.


Only used for emergencies and by emergency departments. Like search and rescue


EDC flashlights can be used for a number of ways/reasons.


They are great for:

  • Camping


In camping, you feel the dire need of a flashlight for example, in finding your way back to camp, an EDC flashlight is your one true companion when it comes to travel and adventure necessities.

  • Hiking

A perfect sport for adventure lovers, hiking not only requires great stamina but also basic necessities such as an EDC flashlight as well. As, often when you lose trail when hiking especially at night.

Hiking is no fun sport at night and obviously, flashlights come handy in such situations. Handheld flashlights with the most lumens, to me, are needed the most in these situations. Camping/hiking, trust me, the more lumens the better.

  • Work


While working, an EDC flashlight can be helpful to search in places such as under the cupboards, under the seat of a car and others. It’s good for working. Cops use them.

Construction and laborer workers use them. Sometimes it is required especially if you work in dark areas and certain areas of employment. Plus, they’re more of a comfortable option than the old, long, thick flashlights from back in the day.


What exactly is the NEED of an EDC flashlight?

Consider a few situations:

Let’s say that you are traveling somewhere far from home for work or any other purpose and its night and suddenly out of nowhere, your car breaks down on the road in a particularly unpopulated area. Its night and there is no way you could check what the problem really is.

In such a situation, if you have a variety of awesome flashlights in your EDC kit, it could be of great help, as you can examine the engine for checking the necessary things and finding the fault for yourself.

An EDC flashlight would be perfect because you can slip the light into tiny crevices, the only thing you would have to worry about is your hand being able to fit in those crevices. A regular flashlight probably wouldn’t get the job done.

Now, consider another situation, you and your best friend plan to go camping. Once there, you are enjoying all the wildlife and nature at its peak and thinking things couldn’t be better.

Just then, you come up with an idea to explore the place a bit more and head out with your friend pretending to be fellows of Indiana Jones and while exploring, it’s getting dark and you want to head back to your safe camp, but suddenly you realize that you have forgotten the way back.

Now, being in the wild in the dark is NOT a good option, as there are all kinds of creatures/animals who are come outside at night to hunt and to be safe from them, you need something bright to show you the trail back to your camp. And in order to see in the dark, you require a good EDC flashlight.

Bottom-line: An EDC flashlight is a greater choice because it far lighter and provides more light that your traditional flashlight.


  • It is compact in size, so it can be carried anywhere without having to worry about the place it will occupy.
  • They make the best self-defense flashlight
  • It is light weight, so can be carried easily.
  • Offers higher power and light which is useful in many situations
  • Durable and lasts longer than the normal flashlights
  • Other models may have a rigid shape along the end where the light come out of. Also, known as a bezel. This is for self-defense.
  • Normal flashlights just don’t compare. They are long, can be heavy, and don’t produce enough light.
  • Often made with stronger materials.


When talking about Budget, it is a critical point in the selection of the right EDC flashlight.

There are many flashlights available in the market, but the selection of the right one is the basic question. So, as a rule of thumb, whenever you are searching for a flashlight, keep in mind what exactly you need it for?

When choosing an EDC flashlight, many people tend to go cheap. I’m talking dollar store cheap. Which I personally, do not prefer. I mean, the brightest flashlight on the market doesn’t have to break your bank but also shouldn’t be worth a penny.

As going cheap, you must sacrifice on a lot of things, such as higher power consumption, lower lumen capacity, poor build and others which makes the flashlight practically unusable in certain situations. So, it is better to invest ONE TIME in a good and reputable EDC flashlight to save you the trouble of buying one again.



Well, a ZOOM in an EDC flashlight is considered as the focus point of the flashlight where it changed from flash to flood light. This quality, which is present in good EDC flashlights enables you to adjust the beam of the flashlight according to choice.

It is perfect for outdoor and can be used for different circumstances daily. There are various zoom options available such as the x1, x250, x500, x1000, and x2000. The zoom option you would like to opt for depends upon what you normally use the EDC flashlight for and intend to use it for.

I personally prefer the x500 zoom as it gives me the precision which I require for daily outdoor activities.


The range of a flashlight is the distance to which it can throw the light. There are several ranges of EDC flashlights, often measured in meters.  I prefer the one with 100-meter range which is ideal for outdoor activities.

  • Micro

This type of flashlight which can also be attached with a keychain is ideal for tasks such as opening key hole and others.

  • Mini

A Mini EDC flashlight which is slightly larger than a Micro flashlight is ideal for carrying everyday tasks, such as walking around the house at night, looking for something in your room etc.

  • Small, medium large

A number of super bright flashlight sizes exists from small, medium, or large which are used according to the type of work and situation. Such as for construction workers and rescue teams they require large flashlights to beam everything clearly, while camping a medium sized flashlight will save the day on the other hand a small sized flashlight could be used for simple tasks such as checking under the surfaces for lost things and others.

What do you carry on you every day?  Is an EDC flashlight among those items?  Having a light with your everyday carry items can help you, others, and improve safety.  Let’s take a look at some things to consider and how a EDC flashlight can benefit you.

Benefits of An EDC Flashlight

Carrying a flashlight every day has a good amount of benefits.  Most importantly, you will never find yourself in the dark.  Should you encounter a dark alley, a power outage, or an unfamiliar dark room, there will be light.

This happens more often than you think, and even a little bit of light can increase comfort level among those who are in the dark.

If you carry a firearm, whether as a concealed carry or for work, having a flashlight is a must. And in cases of carrying a pistol, having a flashlight can make the difference between making a good shot and missing your target.

Low light shooting conditions can be difficult in the best of circumstances. Sometimes, having a flashlight will save you from having to use a gun in the first place.

With a bright beam, a flashlight can easily startle any attacker.  It doesn’t matter if they are human or animal.  Most creatures you encounter won’t be expecting a bright beam of light in their eyes.

I don’t know how many times I have been looking for something at work when I encountered a cabinet or area I couldn’t see the back of.  The EDC flashlight that i carried was able to illuminate it for me.

No matter what job you work, a flashlight can be helpful.  Repairing computers, light up the case.  Working in a warehouse, illuminate dark corners.  Working security, make checking buildings easier.  The possibilities are endless.


Traditional flashlights use regular light-bulbs to cast light.  These are great for people who are looking for an affordable flashlight to light up places at home like a closet. 

They don’t cast much light and what they do illuminate it’s with a duller light. But some of the most powerful flashlights in the world will require better bulbs… therefore, LEDS are best.

The light source that I both prefer and recommend is a CREE LED.  These are one of the latest design for LEDs.  They are super strong and can be made to put out over 1000 lumens (read more about that in a later section).

LED light bulbs have another benefit, they are much more power efficient.  I have a flashlight that I don’t charge for months because it lasts so long.  I don’t use it every day but I know it’s there when I need it.

Another thing you will notice is that LED lights have a very white appearance.  They can make it look like it is day in a room.  They also can shine from the ground up to the sides of a building if they have enough power.

Listed below are a few advantages you might want to consider:

  1. One word: ENERGY EFFICIENT. It can conserve your battery. When you are dealing with some of the strongest flashlights, energy conservation is definitely required.
  2. More durable because LED doesn’t use filaments or glass. Can withstand some impacts and any vibrations you may come against
  3. They operate in cold temperature very well
  4. They last a lot longer than the fluorescent bulbs. So, you save money over time
  5. You won’t find these in a standard flashlight.

There are a variety of power sources available for flashlights. 

I don’t just mean that there are a variety of battery types. 

Because if you have the brightest flashlight on market, it’ll need a sufficient power source.

Power sources vary from gas to battery and solar. 

Here is a full list of power sources available to you for flashlights in general:

  • Battery
  • Solar
  • Propane
  • Butane
  • Gasoline
  • Corded
  • Dual Fuel
  • Manual (Crank)

Now, if you think about it a variety of these power sources are not good for everyday carry.  You probably don’t want to be carrying a butane or propane powered flashlight in your pocket (or can you even fit in your pocket).  In addition to that, you don’t want to rely on solar power or a crank when you are in a situation that you need power for your light.

A battery powered flashlight is the best option for EDC.  You can get batteries of a variety of sizes so that you can keep your flashlight going for a good amount of time.  You can also get rechargeable ones so that you don’t need to worry about keeping new batteries handy.

Some of the coolest rechargeable flashlights are charged through a USB port.  That means you can charge it without anything fancy, all you need is your phone charger.

Alternate power methods are great if they come combined with a standard battery.  For example, if you get an EDC flashlight that has a battery to power the device, you could have a solar panel or crank to help add extra lifetime to your flashlight.


In the simplest terms, the measure of lumens is how you determine how bright a light-bulb is.  The term has a much more complicated definition that has to do with the amount of light given off through a solid angle.

You probably don’t want to know all that though.  So, for ease of buying a new flashlight, the higher the lumen count on your flashlight, the brighter it will be.

When you are talking lumens with LED flashlights, you can get up to high numbers.  In a reasonably sized EDC flashlight that uses LEDs you can get into the thousands.  With a flashlight this bright you can light up a whole room.  You can also disorient an attacker.

I recommend that anyone who is looking to use their flashlight to repel attackers (humans or animals) get close to, or above, 1000 lumens.  This will give you optimum power to disorient them, especially if you use a strobe mode.

For general purpose EDC flashlights look for somewhere in the two to three hundred range.  This will give you enough brightness to light up the back of a closet, a locker, or something similar without blinding you.

One of the great things about an LED flashlight though, is that you don’t have to have two separate flashlights, one for an attacker and one for general purpose.  LED bulbs can be dimmed with a switch so there are a variety of brightness levels available on one device.

Having an adjustable brightness LED flashlight is the best option as it allows you to be versatile and tune your device to your exact needs.

Here are a few measurements I suggest you pay attention to.

1 – 59 = Average. Insufficient. Doesn’t illuminate a tiny room all that much.

15 –  59 = Good for power outages. That’s about it.

60 – 149 = Decent amount for going camping. Light lifespan is about 6 months – 1 year.

150 – 299 = Light room with this. Your backyard also. On a camping site? Expect to see well past a few yards. Light lifespan is about 6 months – 1 year.

300 – 699 =  300 lumens plus, you are now in serious territory. A football field will be lit to a good amount that you can see some of the entirety of the field.

It’s like you are walking around with the brightest led torch in your pocket.

Also, when there are more lumens, a high majority of small flashlights will have a burst mode feature. This feature is what enables them to reach those high lumen levels.


This is the amount i prefer. Going beyond 700 lumens is great. This is a lot. Even for me. But only great flashlights can push out this amount.

These flashlights with this much power is your friend. Most search and rescue teams would employ these types of flashlights for work.

If you have 1200 lumens, this is a professional level type of brightness that you have at your disposal.

This amount is what I really prefer. This amount is something you see with military forces, tactical operations, etc.

There are two types of bezels that you can get for a flashlight: crenulated bezel/rigid bezel and a flat bezel.  Flat bezels look plain, have good lines, and are what standard flashlights come with. 

I recommend that anyone who wants a EDC light for defense get a crenulated bezel.

The uneven levels on the bezel allow for you to use it for striking an attacker.  This can do more damage than just whacking them with a flashlight. 

Make sure that you practice with the light so that you know you can get the bezel on target.

A crenulated bezel is also great for rescue purposes.  If you happen across a car accident for example, you can break a window to get a person out with the bezel.  It makes it easier and safer.

There are very few reasons you might want to get a flat or standard bezel.  The only time you might want one is when you’re working for a company that does not allow you to carry a tactical flashlight. 

Some security companies don’t want their officers carrying rigid bezel flashlights as they look aggressive.


EDC flashlights need to be durable.  There are many different circumstances they might have to put up with.  One of them we have already mentioned more than once.  Your flashlight needs to put up with striking an attacker.  If your flashlight breaks on the first strike, you will be left without a weapon.

Your EDC flashlight is bound to also fall occasionally and maybe get run over with a car just like many other things you own.  Aircraft grade aluminum and aircraft grade aluminum alloy are the best materials to look for in a flashlight.

I recommend them because they are extremely durable and can put up with all the abuse that you might put it through.

Aluminum made to aircraft standards is rated better than just aluminum so it is a must when looking for flashlights.

You also want your flashlight to be water tight and able to resist the rain.  If you are walking in the rain, you don’t want your flashlight to short or die.  This can happen if you have a cheaply made flashlight.

An important note is that the term “military grade” or any variation of that is deceptive.  The military uses flashlights for a variety of purposes and there are many companies that create flashlights that could handle military purposes.  For example, the flashlights that a recruiter hands out at an event don’t have to be nearly as durable as those used in a combat zone.

Don’t use military grade or mil-spec as a sign that an EDC flashlight is what you are looking for.  Instead, look for one with the above-mentioned metal, one that is physically durable.

One last durability note.  Make sure the button for your flashlight won’t wear or break.  I have had multiple flashlights throughout my life that have had the button come off because they weren’t up to the tasks of having a finger pushing it on and off regularly.  You need an EDC flashlight that is there when you need it.



The standards for Flashlights are as follows:

  1. Beam Distance
  2. Impact & Water resistance
  3. Light output
  4. Peak Beam Intensity
  5. Runtime

These ANSI FSI standards, not just as a tactical flashlight can also be used for other lights too, Therefore, it can also serve as a camping flashlight. Before that, the very first thing you should consider is the rating of the lumen.


Distance of the beam

  • When a flashlight is switched on to the full extent that the battery powers the distance that is traveled by the light, it demeans the safety of traveling outside. It is considered to be safe to be carried outside when it projects a full moon effect.

Water resistance

  • Based on the level of water it absorbs, it may stop working for several times. It is very vital to check the water resistance level. While some may be affected by a drop of water for a long time, a simple raindrop can affect others. The water resistance level has been rated and tested according to IPX system.

Light output

  • The light radiance, the intensity, and density of the decimal is measured in lumens. Although the light variations and brightness can not only be caused by the apex of beams reduced from the external flashlight factors of light eyesight distance and vision.

Peak beam intensity

  • This is also measured in candela (unit of measurement for light). This gives us the opportunity to figure out just how bright the brightest point of the light beam will be. The resistance impact is, however, measured just to make sure the flashlight is strong enough.

Time sustenance

  2. With the IPX7 rating, the light can work while being under water of about 1 meter for about 30 minutes.
  3. With the IPX4 rating, the flashlights have been tested to work perfectly well when around splashing water. Therefore, there are no worries here.

The next paragraphs down below go a little in depth into the IP RATING.

IP rating is used to give a level of the protection of electrical enclosures against dust and water.  IP is always followed by 2 digits. The first digit is for protection against solids such as dust, the second is for protection of within the item against water.

  • Note that IP 65 equals First Digits –Solids (Level of protection against solids)
  • Also, IP65 equals Second Digit-Liquids (measure of protection against water or liquids)
  • IP stands for Ingress Protection or International Protection ratings

Flood is the amount of light you cast out in general.  For example, if you want to light a whole room, not just what you are pointing at, you will need to flood the room. 

This is great for people who are carrying a flashlight to be able to light up a room or draw attention to themselves during an attack.

Being able to throw your light is the ability to point it at a specific target and have the light directed at it.  If you are using your flashlight for concealed carry, then this might be what you are looking for. 

You might find yourself needing to illuminate a target at the end of a hallway or identify a potential threat at the end of an alley.

A focused beam is also best to throw a light at an attacker’s eyes.  All that light focused into a beam will distract them, blind them, and potentially make them want to flee.

There are flashlights that can do both flood and throw.  These lights have a separate bezel that can be moved in and out to focus the beam on the type of light you want to cast out.

You need to consider these with a light and determine which one you want.  In many cases, power LEDs putting out 1000 lumens will be able to flood, yet make that flood go off far into the distance.

You know how we mentioned that you can dim an EDC flashlight?  Well many EDC flashlights come with special modes known as strobe.  These strobe modes will flash in patterns or as a beacon.  A beacon mode will allow you to signal help if you need it or even disorient an attacker.

One of the most popular strobe patterns that you can get is Morse Code SOS.  This is even better than a beacon for signaling help as it doesn’t just strobe, it sends a message that you need help.

In the past, these special modes have led to people’s lives being saved.  Blinding an attacker can make a real defense in a defensive situation.  Even law enforcement and security officers are taught to use their flashlights as distraction and in defensive methods.  They have learned this technique through past success experiences.

Picking out the right EDC flashlight can be a time-consuming task because you want to make sure you get one that lasts for a long time and more importantly, one that does its job.  By reading this article you have made that decision easier.  You now know what I like, and why I like it.


While there are some techniques to hold a tactical flashlight, the most common are ones are when you are holding a pistol.

But by itself you must hold it in such a way to allow the greatest amount of light fallen into our direction or help us to point out our target. I find that it depends largely on the situation at hand.

If someone is approaching you or you are approaching someone, and maybe that person is suspicious or you worry about your safety.

Then you hold that flashlight up by your ear, along the side of your head. The other way is to hold the flashlight by your waist or alongside your torso.

For my preference, I prefer holding it by my ear. Doing this is perfect because if the person tries to attack you can swing your hand and strike your attacker.

Also holding it by your head allows the light to be close to your eyes, thus illuminating your field of vision directly.

It’s must easier than holding your light by your hip or waist and bringing it up to strike. Your leverage is greater when you’re holding the flashlight by your head. More leverage equals more force in your strike when you try to counter attack.

I have come across a few methods I am going to share with you for holding your flashlight with a gun.


In what is a departure from the norm, I came across this technique while surfing the internet. Its a technique requiring one hand. This approach to taking a shot which is an upgrade of the Neck index approach was termed ‘Eye Index Approach.’

Steps To Performing The Eye Index Strategy

With the aid of your free hand, hold your EDC flashlight. This is done to keep the illumination tool beside your eyes. It also has two benefits which are to make the flashlight lighten up both your target and the sight of the gun.

It is imperative to have a clear view of the two stated above for an accurate shot.

The second benefit is that it shields you from any possible head shot as your hand is up there with your head.

Stretch out your dominant hand (gun hand). Note that to have a firm grip on recoil, you would have to alter the way you handle the weapon. With a grip stronger than when you are using both hands, tightly hold the gun.

Make sure you put your trigger finger in its maximum relaxed state. To be certain of similar pressure on the back strap at the rear of the gun, raise your thumb up at a slight angle.

Avoid stretching your arm out completely(bend your elbow a little). What this does is position your arm at the back of the gun to aid recoil control.

Put on your flashlight. If positioned correctly, the rays of light will light up both your target and the views of the gun. Observe carefully and look around. Switch off the light and be in motion.

On seeing a dangerous person or threat, unbalance him/her by dominating his face with the flashlight; during the short time he’s confused, analyze the situation and decide your next move.

If you intend on pointing your light at a neutral person (who isn’t a threat), with one hand, lower your gun to chest level and in an ‘alert’ position. Holding your gun close to your chest prevents you from being disarmed and taken by surprise.

Another way to hold the light comes from Ray Chapman.This skill was ‘christened’ or named after him. He was the inaugural champion of the world pistol competition in the year 1975. This approach entails positioning the torchlight in a sword-like manner to get a firm grip and holding the torch beside the gun.

You are to hold the light with your thumb and forefinger. The remaining fingers will be wrapped around your dominant hand. This approach has a major downside.

It was conceptualized when most torch/flashlights featured the power on and power off at the sides, in contrast to the EDC flashlights made today. Modern flashlights feature the power on button towards the end, something which you will come to experience.

Massad Ayoob, a foremost world authority in firearms and publisher of The Gravest Extreme and other popular books, created The Ayoob Flashlight approach.

This technique shares a similarity with the one named after Ray Chapman. Both methods involving positioning the torch in a sword like a manner with a firm grip.

The Ayoob strategy differs in the holding of the light over the hand and combining both thumbs like the standard grip called ‘thumb forward.’

Bill Rogers, a retired super agent with the FBI and a top authority in the weapon industry, developed The Rogers flashlight Strategy. In this technique, you are to hold your flashlight in the middle of both your index and middle fingers.

You move the torch to a position where it is beside the gun, make your two thumbs touch each other and wrap the remaining two fingers around your dominant hand(shooting hand).

This technique is the most similar method to the approach that involves two hands, of all another flashlight- based methods.

With a firm grip like that of the ‘ice pick,’ hold your torch immediately under your ear near your neck and jaw. This technique’s only demerit is the proximity of the flashlight to the head.

If a threat is aiming at the light, your head is not safe. This technique may be difficult to get a hold of. But it’s great because it illuminates your target and it is like the regular two hand combat grip.

So, if you’re a right-handed shooter such as myself, then you would be holding the flashlight with your left hand.

You know how you would hold an ice pick, right. Well, it’s the same way you want to hold the flashlight. You need that same grip that you put on the “ice pick.”

Holding it this way, you’ll be able to strike with the flashlight in the downward arch with a lot of force. Almost like your stabbing someone. If you have to turn off or turn on the flashlight, you can do so with your left thumb.

Okay, now you got yourself a good solid grip on your light. Put your left hand underneath your gun, then you’ll be putting both of your hands back to back.

Hold on. Don’t put your hand in front of a loaded gun. We don’t want any accidents, do we?

Maintain your position along with pressure, and make sure both of your wrists are touching. The back of both your hands should be together.

SureFire is a story of what can be achieved with the power of light. It all began somewhere in 1969 when an engineer with a Ph.D. from Cal Tech had a vision that the future is in lasers.

The founder of Newport Corporation, Dr. John Mathews created it to harness the power of industrial applications of the lasers.

The Newport Corporation over the last ten years grew to become a major player in the laser field, thus, leading a lot of other industrial uses for the laser. The business boomed, contracts were won and patents were issued.

John, while basking in the light of success decided to turn his creative mind to shooting; his passion and hobby. He thought if there could be a way to have a laser as a sight on a firearm. John’s concept became a reality in 1979 when he fabricated and patented a laser light.

Judging by today’s standards, the original laser sight was quite unwieldy and large. Further refinement of the new technology must have led the board of the Newport Corporation to approve subsequent investments apart for its main business interests.

John and several other technical staff members of the Newport Corporation who shared his passion and vision met the board with an offer to purchase the laser sight business.

John resigned as president of Newport Corporation when the offer was accepted and assumed leadership of Laser Products, the newly birthed company. After this, John had enough time to channel all his energy and zeal towards the commercialization of laser sights for guns.

The company’s first product was a handgun sight for a Colt Trooper which was soon followed by a laser sight for a  Ruger Mini-14. In 1984, a call came in from a local police agency which would literally change the history of Laser Products and Dr. John Mathews.

The call came in from The SWAT team of the Los Angeles Police Department. The city of Angeles was to host the Olympic Games in 1984 and the police department was wondering if the company could lend them some laser-sighted shotguns to be used for security during the games.

John answered in affirmation saying that won’t be a problem.

In the preceding year, the expensive, technically superb, laser-sighted firearms made way for other developments that would come after it.

Although none proved to be commercially viable, the willingness of Laser Products to accommodate the needs of law enforcements to the development of a novel idea at the time, a weapon-mounted flashlight.

The SureFire Weapon Light was birthed and low-light military and law enforcement operations were in for a new era.

SureFire as a name, eventually became so synonymous with excellence in illumination tools that were hand-held that the company name, Laser Products was dropped for SureFire LLC.
